Electromagnetic compatibility and low-voltage tests

This section performs tests to verify the conformity of civil, industrial and military apparatus with electromagnetic compatibility requirements, dealing more specifically with industrial, scientific and IT equipment.

Which tests can be performed?

The laboratory performs the following tests:
  • EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and LVD Directive 2014/35/EU compliance testing
  • military/civil avionics EMC testing – in accordance with standards MIL-STD-461G and RTCA-DO160G
In particular:
  • radiated and conducted emissions;
  • radiated and conducted immunity;
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD);
  • harmonics, flicker and burst;

The laboratory can also perform type approval testing, qualification and (CE) certification of end products.
Working in tandem with the engineers and technicians of customers from the military and-or avionics sector, the section can also arrange to set up the test procedures specified by standards.

What facilities does the laboratory have?

The EMC laboratory comprises 4 shielded chambers with the following specifications:

Shielded semi-anechoic chamber, one Italy’s most important in terms of size and performance, used for radiated measurements
  • Dimensions: 16 x 8 x 6 [WxDxH] m
  • External access door: 4,50 x 2,97 [WxH] m
  • Turntable: capacity 2000 kg; diameter 3,0 m (installable to order)
  • Exhaust gas and fume extraction system
  • Available power: 400 Vac 3P+N 50 Hz – 65 kW max

3 shielded chambers for instruments, control of equipment under test and conducted measurements
  • Chamber 1 dimensions: 5,15 x 3,74 x 3,5 [WxDxH] m
  • Chamber 2 dimensions: 4,00 x 3,74 x 3,5 [WxDxH] m
  • Chamber 3 dimensions: 6,40 x 3,74 x 3,5 [WxDxH] m

These facilities mean that even very large specimens can be tested.

The laboratory's technical staff assists companies in defining requirements and designing the tests/measurements to be performed.
In the event that non-conformities are identified, a problem analysis is conducted, and additional tests are carried out to achieve, where possible, a solution that ensures compliance with the requirements specified in the applicable standards.
